What is RAPID?

The RAPID (Recording Academic, Professional and Individual Development) Progress File is a mechanism designed to enable and support you to monitor, build and reflect upon your personal and professional development. This version is specifically designed to assist students within the discipline of Building Engineering prepare for membership of the Association of Building Engineers (ABE).

To gain membership of the ABE your students/graduates will need to have achieved a degree/diploma qualification through undergraduate / postgraduate study on an accredited degree/diploma course, together with two years of appropriate experience *. In the process your students/graduates will be expected to display relevant knowledge, competence in a range of skills, and an awareness of the value dimensions of building engineering work and the ethical responsibility of the engineer **.

* Note: there is also a specifically designed 'distance learning' route, and special mechanisms to allow entry to the profession for engineers trained in other EU countries, and in some overseas countries. (Full details available from the ABE)

** Note: A mentoring service is available for new graduates who are ABE student members.

The RAPID Progress File helps to prepare students/graduates for membership of the ABE by:

  • Developing a process (involving Skills Audit, Action Planning, Reflection and Evidence gathering), that matches the processes required for Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Providing a framework for recording achievements and for storing appropriate evidence.

RAPID allows the user to:

  • Maintain a record of personal details
  • Record achievement in whatever context made
  • Assess and develop skills and competencies
  • Gather evidence to support claims of competence
