Recording Skills Examples
The following three examples reveal how different users of the RAPID
Progress File might record their competence in different skills. A commentary
is provided to illustrate points that may be useful to you :-
Example 1 - a new undergraduate
Comments
- The first piece of evidence supports the statement the student has
made regarding his or her level of competence in this skill.
- The first piece of evidence - certificate and school report - is authenticated
i.e. supported by relevant and reliable documentation.
- The first piece of evidence is clearly referenced.
- The second piece of evidence does not
appear to support the statement claimed, e.g. the audience appears to
be familiar and the subject straightforward.
- The second piece of evidence - rough copy of notes - cannot be readily
authenticated.
- The evidence is not
referenced and the location is too vague.
- There is a lack of sufficiency i.e. enough
evidence to support the claim of competence. He or she needs to show
that they can repeat this skill.
- Conclusion : this student should have claimed the
next lower statement of competence (statement B). He or she needs further
appropriate evidence to support the first piece of evidence cited.
Example 2 - a final year undergraduate
Comments
- The evidence cited clearly supports the statement the student has
made regarding his or her claim of competence in this skill.
- The formal evidence is sufficient, authenticated
and clearly referenced
- The second piece of evidence is very relevant to this skill but is
not authenticated.
The student could seek a testimonial from a member of the Rag committee
or, failing that, a statement from one of the team to detail what exactly
was the role of this student in the event.
- The evidence cited may indeed be appropriate to claim a higher level
of competence i.e. statement C.
- Conclusion : this evidence clearly supports the claim
of competence made. The student in question should seek advice (e.g.
from a personal tutor) as to whether the evidence supports the next
statement (statement C) of competence in this skill.
Example 3 - a graduate
Comments
- The evidence cited clearly supports this PDP candidate's claim of
competence in this skill.
- The evidence is sufficient, varied and authentic.
- All evidence is clearly referenced and retrievable.
- The sum of the evidence covers all aspects of the statement.
- Conclusion : the claim of competence (statement D)
is fully supported by the evidence cited.
