Recording Skills Examples

The following three examples reveal how different users of the RAPID Progress File might record their competence in different skills. A commentary is provided to illustrate points that may be useful to you :-


Example 1 - a new undergraduate

B I can prepare and deliver a presentation on a subject, to a familiar audience, explaining myself clearly.
C I can prepare and deliver a presentation on a complex subject, to an unfamiliar audience, using an appropriate tone and style and dealing with any questions and avoiding digressions.
D I can prepare and deliver a presentation on a complex subject, to a variety of different audiences, encouraging further discussion and participation by people with alternative views. I am able to synthesise the discussions and sum up the various contributions in relation to the presentation. Finally in preparing the presentation I take cognisance of issues such as gender, culture etc, choices being made in terms of language, method of communication and approach taken and I am able to judge the effectiveness of my presentation.

Evidence of Competence Location

Comments

  1. The first piece of evidence supports the statement the student has made regarding his or her level of competence in this skill.
  2. The first piece of evidence - certificate and school report - is authenticated i.e. supported by relevant and reliable documentation.
  3. The first piece of evidence is clearly referenced.
  4. The second piece of evidence does not appear to support the statement claimed, e.g. the audience appears to be familiar and the subject straightforward.
  5. The second piece of evidence - rough copy of notes - cannot be readily authenticated.
  6. The evidence is not referenced and the location is too vague.
  7. There is a lack of sufficiency i.e. enough evidence to support the claim of competence. He or she needs to show that they can repeat this skill.
  8. Conclusion : this student should have claimed the next lower statement of competence (statement B). He or she needs further appropriate evidence to support the first piece of evidence cited.

Example 2 - a final year undergraduate

Comments

  1. The evidence cited clearly supports the statement the student has made regarding his or her claim of competence in this skill.
  2. The formal evidence is sufficient, authenticated and clearly referenced
  3. The second piece of evidence is very relevant to this skill but is not authenticated. The student could seek a testimonial from a member of the Rag committee or, failing that, a statement from one of the team to detail what exactly was the role of this student in the event.
  4. The evidence cited may indeed be appropriate to claim a higher level of competence i.e. statement C.
  5. Conclusion : this evidence clearly supports the claim of competence made. The student in question should seek advice (e.g. from a personal tutor) as to whether the evidence supports the next statement (statement C) of competence in this skill.

Example 3 - a graduate

Indicate your competence in this skill :-
A I can recognise a need for information, identify appropriate resources to fit the need and begin to use simple techniques to find the necessary information.
B I can understand a user's enquiry for information, match the necessary resources with the information needed and by constructing a strategy locate the required information. In doing this I recognise the need to gain relevant details from the enquirer and I understand access issues and how information from more than one source may be required.
C I can answer a complex user enquiry4 by locating information using the appropriate search techniques with a clear knowledge of indexing and thesaurus construction. After accessing the necessary information I can analyse this and confirm that the information matches the need.
D I can successfully locate and access information to satisfy a complex user query, compare information from a variety of sources identified through the use of a range of search strategies, and ensure this clearly meets the information need. I can also apply this information to a problem and in keeping with copying and plagiarism requirements and best practice, organise and communicate the desired information appropriately.

  5. Conclusion : the claim of competence (statement D) is fully supported by the evidence cited.
